The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the most sweeping reform of U.S. food safety laws in more than 70 years, was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it.(1) The law gives federal authorities new powers to prosecute company officials, require mandatory recalls, along with other changes.
PBi is pleased to announce we have reached a new milestone in our food safety efforts. In November 2015, Silliker laboratories audited our facility, food safety procedures, and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) system and approved us as having Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for food packaging materials.
The GMP audit focused on our:
- Internal procedures to ensure we manufacture and store packaging in a clean, food safe way.
- Security to ensure that tampering is not possible with our products
- Food safety compliance of our vendors, both domestic and global
- Traceability so any product can be recalled from a customer within two hours in a case where contamination is discovered in a specific lot of product
The third-party, GMP certification ensures that our packaging products, whether manufactured in our facility or sourced globally, are safe for our customerâs food products and comply with new federal regulations.
